Onsen Yosei Hakone-chan (Hakone-chan) Episode 4 – “Hot Spring Spirit Hakone-chan”

Just in case you aren’t following us on social media, here is why we are, for a short time, suspending our plot summaries:

I hate to keep cutting back on the value of the articles that we write, but at the moment we simply do not have the time to make those detailed plot summaries due to work and college. With that said, until we are able to get into a consistent schedule, ~C and I will not be doing any plot summaries. When we catch up, though, please expect it to be back and fully functional.

Review:

  1. Plot/Content: I was fairly neutral about the plot of this episode. It was rather, how should I say, consistent. Nothing was interesting, but nothing was just plain boring. It was a weird middle state of contentment of just being able to watch. It was plain, but it moved the show in a certain direction, and I think that’s the most important thing to take away from here. This show seemed fairly aimless in the beginning, so it’s nice to see that there really is something unfolding as we continue to watch.
  2. Character Developments: Guess how many character developments there were in this episode? … Well, actually one. THEY ACTUALLY GAVE HAKONE-CHAN A JOB. SHE’S LIKE FIVE. No one actually believes that she’s the hot spring spirit, so why in the world would they allow a CHILD to be a dumping tour guide because she can do a few magic tricks? Maybe the small town lifestyle of the Japanese is a tad bit different from my pampered American lifestyle, but that seems a little ridiculous, don’t you think? It’s not like this whole job thing will be a bad thing for the storyline, but it does seem tasking on Hakone’s tiny body. … I don’t want to sound strange, but I’m worried for her. Like… WHAT IF SHE DIES BECAUSE SHE JUST CAN’T EVEN?! Poor Hakone-chan.
  3. Interactivity: Again, we find Hakone being shown to be as a child. She uses up her power in little spurts which puts her in a position of exhaustion. It is obvious that she can’t do much by herself (given that she’s like five and all), so her friends have to be there for when she’s pretty much passing out on the ground. A good way to keep the other characters involved in the show, if I do say so myself. Think about it. You don’t spend every second with your friends, do you? Well, in anime there always seems to be the ability of friends hanging out with each other. It just doesn’t work like this in real life, but they certainly make it seem believable in shows such as these. On another note I did find it interesting how Tohya actually ended up buying her those little magic cubes for her hair. It seems that he may be growing somewhat fond of the little girl even though she is a hassle to keep around (sis-com, maybe?). Regardless, it is certain that he will continue to view her as a child and will continue to treat her as such.
  4. Use of Time: They are getting better in this category for every episode they release. The writers are more wisely spending their time on content and pushing the story forward rather than being set on trivial things. Something fairly distressing, though, is that the humor factor in the show isn’t as strong as I was hoping that it would be. Naturally, for a show this short, you only have that given amount of time, but I feel like they could have distributed time a little better to include something more humorous than Hakone just shooting her Water Gun. Like, yeah, it was great the first few times, but now it’s just getting old.

Episode Rating: B – As a whole, I was rather impressed with the outcome of the episode. Rather than being the usual fan service-y type of show that we have seen it to be in the first two episodes, I believe Hakone-chan is very possibly taking a turn for the better. The storyline is no longer being hindered with pointless content of suggestive ideas, which is a huge deal for this show because it is only three minutes long, after all.
